Meet John Keston: Runner, Singer, Teacher, Friend

July 15 – Today I reconnected with my college voice teacher, John Keston. He leads an interesting life, still running competitively and setting world records in the 80-84 age group. Some of you may know him as Gehn in the video game, Riven: The Sequel to Myst. He and wife Anne live in Sunriver, Oregon.

He has a wonderfully declamatory style of singing (he was born in Britain and a former member of the Royal Shakespeare Company), and has influenced my style of singing greatly. One of my favorite song cycles, Finzi’s A Young Man’s Exhortation, came to my attention while accompanying him in his show, Expressions of Aging.

I authored the Wikipedia article on John, and found images for it as well. Two are from shows he appeared in: Sweet Charity, the original London production, and Trevor Nunn’s Sherlock Holmes, which played on Broadway. Playbills from these shows, which I own, remind me of the work and goals ahead of me.
